When celebrities claim that they live normal lives when not in the spotlight, I want to believe them, I really do. But every time I read those gossip mags (Okay, I admit, I'm hopelessly addicted!), I realise that what's normal for them is insanely bizarre to me. Why, in my world, marriages break up with much rona-dhona and family interventions to somehow help keep the couple together. But in their world, they're 'consciously uncoupling' (The Gwyneth Paltrow-Chris Martin divorce, for those not in the know). I have to admit, before I figured out what it meant, the phrase sounded so frightfully classy, I wanted to consciously uncouple too! Last week, Gopika Kaul wrote a wonderful piece on the strange parenting practices she'd read about. It inspired me to come up with my own list of celebrities who've made my eyebrows shoot up so high, they almost disappeared into my forehead!
See no more!
Yes we know its good to keep children away from the idiot box, but some celebrities take this to another level. And when it's about Madonna, it's got to be at least a little OTT, right? Apparently, she doesn't allow her children to watch TV or read the newspaper-at all. Also, they are only allowed to drink Kabbalah-blessed water. Erm, okay.
While I'm all for loving, nurturing and cuddling the kids, there is a limit. But not for Alanis Morissette, it seems. She insists that she will breastfeed her son until he is ready to wean, even if that means she has to wait until he is 6 years old (right now, he's 2). While medically there's no harm in doing this, I have to admit, it seems a bit creepy to me.
Angelina is the poster mommy of Hollywood with a brood of six children, who travel the world with her and the yummy Mr Pitt. The kids apparently account for 25% of the couple's annual expenditure. But wait, that's not the strange part. What's a little freakish is that this alpha mommy likes to collect her children's bloody bandages and wants to transform them into art. Seriously? That's one very weird way of creating memories.
Freedom is good, and yes, we should all give kids some amount of independence. For the usual parent, giving a child freedom would mean let her choose whether she wants to wear the pink shoes or green ones. Celine Dion is far ahead of the average parent. She is so committed to the cause of freedom that she lets her son decide everything. Literally-everything. And so the boy got his first haircut only at the age of 8, sporting waist-length locks before that. Joining her on the freedom brigade is ex-couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who let their daughter Suri, all of 7 years old, express her inner self by letting her wear makeup and springing for a million-dollar wardrobe. WOW.
While we know it's difficult for any baby to be away from his mum for long, the Duchess of Cambridge's method of keeping baby George happy, is funny to say the least. When his parents travel on engagements, the little prince is wrapped up in special Kate-Middleton-scented comforters while his Spanish nanny looks after him. That's one sure way of confusing an 8-month-old!
Do you know of any parenting news that made your jaw drop too? We'd love to know!
